Remembering Aaliyah

Postby Jay » 26 Aug 2007, 18:48

Aaliyah Haughton (January 16, 1979 – August 25, 2001)

Image

It's been six years since Aaliyah was killed in a plane crash.

On August 25, 2001, at 6:49 pm (EST), just after wrapping up filming of the "Rock the Boat" video, Aaliyah and various members of her record company boarded a twin engine Cessna 402B (N8097W) at Marsh Harbour, Abaco Island, Bahamas to travel to Opa-locka Airport near Miami, Florida, but the plane crashed shortly after takeoff about 200 feet from the runway. Pilot Luis Morales III and all eight passengers, including Aaliyah, were killed in the aviation accident. According to findings from an inquest conducted by the coroner's office in the Bahamas, Aaliyah suffered from "severe burns and a blow to the head," in addition to severe shock. The coroner theorized that, even if Aaliyah had survived the crash, her recovery would have been virtually impossible given the severity of her injuries. Aaliyah's eulogy was held on August 31 at Saint Ignatius Loyola Roman Catholic Church in Manhattan, NYC.

She is notable for recording several hit records, including several number one R&B hits, a number one pop hit, and nine top 10 singles on the Billboard Hot 100. Aaliyah's third studio album, 'Aaliyah', was her most successful - released just one month before her death.

Very sad and I like alot of her stuff but I do think she's a case of an average RnB female artist being bigged up as something much better than she was just because she died young (as in her music which the majority wasn't that special), dont mean for that to sound mean and RIP

I think her record company really milked her music after her death too I suspect we'll be getting more unheard demos in years to come :death:

I only bought her album a few months before she died, after she died I had this song on repeat and always felt sad when listening to it:

I agree about her being bigged up a lot after her death but she wasn't another average R&B singer, her voice was unique!

It really does sound like she is singing to you on the song "I Care For You". :( Also her voice on "At Your Best" is really nice.

But of course her best stuff was with Timbo, they had the perfect partnership like Biggie and Puffy. The beat to "We Need A Resolution" is serious:

I remember reading the news on national TV's tv-text. I was shocked, really. Then I just started to cry like a little baby. I mean, I didn't even know her! But from all the interviews I've seen, she seemed really like a sweet person.

RIP

The news was a huge shock for me. I was truly shocked. I remember my chest kind of tightening up as I saw the news on TV.

She definitely had a vision of where she wanted to go with her career and it was ready to happen. She was an inspiration to so many in the hip hop community, and everytime she had a new single it was the hot song of the moment.

She was hot, her songs were hot, her videos were hot!

I believe she'd be big, really big if she had more time.
