Behaviour on the forums - The roots of DenDen

Postby Dennis » 29 Feb 2012, 15:21

We recently got numerous reports by users of artist-specific forums about "troublemakers", who frequent forums only to wind people up and/or slash the artist's (poor) commercial success/looks/...

DenDen was created to have exactly THIS not happening. Back in 2002, the Spice Girls forum on dotmusic was (one of the) most popular places for fans to be, but it was also heavily spammed by non-fans posting topics such as the infamous "Which Spice Girl has the hairiest fanny?", ridiculous fake news stories etc and nothing was done about it - the admin team didn't care and the forum did not have a moderator. This is the very root of DenDen - to have a place for fans where they can enjoy the company of other fans and discuss things with them, without being annoyed by spoilsports.

Of course DenDen developed over the time, we all got older, views change, there is often not many positive things to discuss and all the old issues have been discussed a zillion times, so there's bound to be less positive overall vibe in any particular artist forum, and of course critical discussions are often the only ones worth following, but there has to be a line.

A post such as "Geri should not bother releasing new music, she knows she will FLOP big time" in a forum of Geri fans is not part of a critical discussion, it's trashing the place and making it less enjoyable for those who genuinely like her and more or less only have DenDen to discuss her publically.

So we as a team would like to ask everyone posting in ANY artist forum to re-consider whether or not their negative posts are a valid critical point relevant to the discussion, or just hurtful towards the fans who love and believe in the particular artist.
At the same time, we would also like everyone to check if a post they are offended by is seen in the right context - even hardcore fans can get dissapointed at times and might say unpleasent things, which is of course not something we would want to regulate.

Be respectful to each other, think about how what you write might look to someone else, and let's not spoil it for those who are happy to have a place to discuss their favorite acts for nearly 10 years.

Thanks! :)

Are we still free to talk about PeriodTina's flops on the Small Talk thread (not on her own forum)? :P

Considering the aguilera-topic basically replaces the whole aguilera-forum, I would say no, even though the "standards" would be a bit lower given it's in Small Talk.

I think this is great. It's time to have some control over the ones who like to act all smart by trashing the forums just for the sake to sound funny and cool. I get the vibe some people in here think that a forum without unnecessary dramas and funny jokes and names isn't enjoyable. DenDen has always been enjoyable back in the day when this didn't happen, I can't get why it couldn't be fun like that again.

It is out of control lately, it's boring and tiring. As a member of Denden since day 1 I find it so annoying when most topics turn into Spice Girl vs Spice Girl. When all said and done it took 5 of them to allow 1 of them to have a solo career, no matter how well they're doing, so respect the other girls and their fans whether you like them or not

Good decision!

Intelligent and fundamented criticism/discussion is more than welcome everywhere, everyone's allowed to an opinion... but deliberate and consistent bashing, name calling, nicknaming, ridiculing, etc, on an artists forum/topic where the fans gather to discuss things is plain childish and rude imo :dizzy:

Thank you. Any chance we can vote on a rule-change about all this as well? I say more stricter policies about "bashing" the girls, or other artists of discussion on the forum, as well as bashing each other publicly in threads that have nothing to do with that.

I think people just need to wise up and think before they post... Being stricter won't make things better in my eyes, people just need to respect their fellow denden crew a little more. I don't think denden is or should be a nanny-state forum.

It works over at the Popjustice forum. Granted, the audience is very different, but their strict rules (and strict moderation) makes it so much more fun to post there.
