Have you tried using a heat treatment before straightening your hair? That might help. Also, a good, deep conditioning masque. That might help a bit.

Mine is the same way. I use Moroccan Oil. Works wonders. It's not the cheapest, but it helps TONS for taming wild hair. I also don't blow dry my hair, and the Moroccan oil cuts down drying time, too. The only time I take heat to my hair is when I'm at the salon and they are styling it after a cut.

I also let my hair air dry most of the time, even in winter. That's why I wash my hair in the evening when I know I won't go out. Blow drying just make my hair looking bad.

Olive oil is a very common treatment for dry hair. Rub some oil into your ponytail (my hairdresser says it's not necessary to do the scalp) leave it in for 20-30 minutes and then wash it with shampoo and conditioner.
It's just normal olive oil, the same you use for cooking. Oh and make sure to wear a bathrobe or something cuz you don't want oil on your clothes lol.
