No one is looking for hidden drug messages, it was simply questioning one line from a song.

Spoiler: show
Random, but I had a look at the number of Spotify streams their singles have:

3,260,409 - Something New
2,285,984 - Sound of the Underground
2,216,872 - Jump
2,152,167 - The Promise (1,197,882 - The Promise [Radio Edit] + 954,285 - The Promise [Album Version])
2,011,643 - I'll Stand By You
1,624,054 - Love Machine
1,615,571 - Something Kinda Ooooh
1,302,679 - Biology
1,296,913 - The Loving Kind (707,064 - The Loving Kind [Album Version] + 589,849 - The Loving Kind [Radio Edit])
1,166,789 - Call The Shots
1,151,915 - Untouchable (777,333 - Untouchable [Album Version] + 374,582 - Untouchable [Radio Mix])
1,009,767 - Can't Speak French (649,251 - Can't Speak French [Radio Edit] + 360,516 - Can't Speak French [Album Version])
943,027 - Sexy! No No No...
678,995 - No Good Advice
672,166 - The Show
448,822 - See The Day
401,410 - Whole Lotta History
387,690 - Wake Me Up (285,534 - Wake Me Up [Album Version] + 102,156 - Wake Me Up [Performance Version included on 'Ten' Deluxe])
355,835 - Beautiful 'Cause You Love Me
331,523 - Long Hot Summer
287,647 - Life Got Cold (191,535 - Life Got Cold [Album Version included on 'Sound of the Underground' Re-issue album] + 96,112 - Life Got Cold [Album Version included on 'The Collection' ('Sound of the Underground' Original album])
259,231 - Walk This Way
228,753 - I Think We're Alone Now

I think that was everything. Remixes are most likely given different play counts but I couldn't be bothered going that deep into doing this lol). Quite an interesting order - Call The Shots is a lot lower than I would have assumed, and Sexy!.

I don't know whether these streams are UK only or worldwide, but I'm assuming the latter... although I'm not sure whether all of their songs are available on Spotify worldwide.

Almost 2 years later, their Spotify totals are:

5,230,689 - Sound of the Underground
4,547,137 - Something New
3,999,686 - Love Machine
3,925,411 - Jump
3,387,894 - The Promise
2,931,005 - Something Kinda Ooooh

1,188,071 - The Promise [Out of Control]

1,028,370 - The Loving Kind (Radio Edit)

910,412 - Untouchable [Out of Control]

583,918 - The Loving Kind
562,199 - Can't Speak French

Those spotify numbers show how local and averagely successful they really were.

*Takes the bait* :p

I've listed their accomplishments enough times to not be bothered to do so again, but ultimately all of their achievements lead them to being one of the most successful acts in the UK of the 2000s, there's really nothing average about that!

Personally I think their Spotify numbers look about right. Nine of their hits generating 2m+ listens certainly seems decent to me, for an act that was predominantly successful in the UK & therefore mainly only remembered in the UK.

A lot of their contemporaries such as Atomic Kitten, Sugababes, Blue etc achieved success in European countries, therefore they have a higher number of people that remember them... so they'll have hits that have managed to rack up higher play counts. That's no surprise. But a lot of the GA hits actually hold up well by comparison when you consider how GA weren't actually well known throughout Europe, or Asia / Australasia like the aforementioned groups were.

I really don't think Spotify should be used as a measure of how successful defunct acts were anyway. After all, a fair few Westlife singles actually have much better streams than the Spice Girls' hits do...

Artists whos peaks were outside the Spotify age do not have streaming figures that are in any way reflective of their popularity. For example, moderate hit The Vamps' 'All Night' has more streaming points than any Britney Spears song, and double the Spotify numbers of Baby One More Time, one of the biggest pop songs of all time worldwide.

I get that you don't like Girls Aloud but their multi platinum albums (including a million seller), 21 top ten singles (some bigger hits than others but enough big hits in there) and sell out arena tours that included like 5 London dates show how successful they were.

Preach it, LMLY *.* (lmao at Naomi image :D)

Here's a nice new article from the Guardian, the journalist reveals his 10 favorite songs. https://www.theguardian.com/music/2017/ ... f-the-best

Quite a lot of positive comments too, refreshing to see.

All in my opinion of course: Biology and Call the Shots are two of the finest pop records of the century. I still adore Something Kinda Ooooh. Sound of the Underground is completely unique in the "winners single" field, still sounds daring and fresh 15 years on. The Tangled Up album is a pop masterpiece.<3

i don't get why people keep saying "but there're local LoL", so what? i fail to see why that's a problem... they may be just a UK act but they made some of the BEST pop songs of all times!

They released 22 singles? Jump, I'll stand by you, See the day, I think we are alone now, Walk this way, Life got cold (Noel Gallagher received writing credits for this given how closely it resembles Wonderwall).

I make that 6 covers/samples. So you are right my maths is bad, it is more than a quarter.

23 singles, 5 covers

(Your inclusion of Life Got Cold is reaching :p ).

It wasn't exactly untypical in the 90/00s for pop acts to release covers. Two of Blue's biggest hits are covers (Too Close / Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word), Sugababes owed their 2002 comeback & subsequent career to a successful cover (Freak Like Me), Westlife and Steps released a fair few. It was more unusual back then not to have covers within your singles discography.

Anyway focusing on a handful of covers is a pretty glass half empty approach to their discography, there were 18 original singles and many of those are undeniably amazing pop songs. That's before looking at their discography as a whole with a string of positively received studio albums (Tangled Up in particular receiving critical acclaim, deservingly). If we do dwell on GA covers, I'd at least argue that Jump & I'll Stand By You are generally regarded as being GA staple hits. The other three, not so much.

Yes but you didn't say "singles", you said "discography", they didn't really have any covers that were album tracks, unless you count the Christmas bonus disc which had some. So you're way off.

Anyway, it isn't the covers they're critically acclaimed for, Call The Shots, The Promise, Something Kinda Ooooh, Love Machine, Biology, Sound of the Underground, The Show all still sound amazing today, it's these kinds of hits people remember the girls for now.

I was bored and decided to list each person who leads the chorus (or that you can distinctly hear) for each single. These are based on my ears so they aren't 100% accurate. Most of the time in groups not every person sings in the chorus on the recording, or one person's vocals will be mixed in to overpower the rest. For a lot of GA's song it sounded like Nadine was singing the chorus by herself which is probably true as a lot of the time producers will mix the "lead singers" vocals on top of their own vocals to make a group sounding effect.

Sound of the Underground - ALL
No Good Advice - ALL
Life Got Cold - ALL

I think that's also the order as to who had the most lines in their songs as well, actually can't work out who had less lines between Kimberley and Nicola. The first few albums were very Nadine/Cheryl.

"Filthy mouthed" Nicola hit a biker and all she was concerned about was if her Porsche is alright. It won't bring her new fans, for sure:

Same here, always thought she'd be the nicest of the bunch/\ some of the comments under the article are just confirmation that's she's a proper mean girl. Kimba sounded nice in one for example but Nicola nightmarish.
