That's not true.

CDs sold in stores in the Middle East are all via record labels. However people used to copy cds and share them around . But everything sold in music stores are legal. Back in the 90s it was mostly cassettes and they were all distributed either directly by virgin / emi etc...or by a legal representative of these labels.

The Middle East region has over 400 million people, and the Spice Girls were massive all over Arabia.
I lived in Beirut and Dubai. Both cities had and still do have Virgin Megastores in addition to other proper record store chains.
Spice Girls albums on cassettes and CD's were sold legally, their songs received heavy radio and TV airplay. So many people I know owned a Spice Girls CD. Why their Middle Eastern sales are never covered?
I also imagine the same could be said about Israel, Egypt, Turkey etc...

Does the Middle East have official chart companies tracking the sales?

If not, that's probably why.

There was a SG article in Billboard back in 1997 with all the places the album had been #1 including Saudi Arabia, Israel and Lebanon and of course on the official Spice Girls website it
states that a number of singles went to #1 in Israel/Middle East, so there must be some official chart information somewhere??

Lebanon has an official Singles Chart that consists of radio airplay and streaming. Unfortunately no official Albums chart was ever published, however Virgin has its own Albums chart for the biggest selling CD's and of course you have the ITunes charts.
I was hoping Virgin might have had disclosed the official sales in the Middle East for the Spice Girls. Apparently not.

So according to Chartmasters.org calculations, the Spice Girls album sales are :

PHYSICAL:

Spice – 21,900,000
Spiceworld – 13,950,000
Forever – 1,200,000

PHYSICAL + DIGITAL + STREAMING EQUIVILANT SALES (CSPC):

Spice – 29,552,000
Spiceworld – 16,458,000
Forever – 1,499,000

The ultimate total of the Spice Girls amounts to 48,2 million equivalent album sales.

It is hard to believe Spiceworld 'only' managed 13,950,000 in its original run, before digital and streaming. The album came out at peak Spice phenomena, had 4 successful singles and was supported by a world tour. Aren't the above figures slightly underestimated?

I think the fact that Spice was launched later in the US helped expand it's shelf life in other parts of the world, while Spice World was promoted in all parts of the world at the same time.

Most of that chart masters seem a little inaccurate at times as some records seem too low and others over inflated.

I read somewhere that between Nov 97-Jan/Feb 1998 Spiceworld had sold 10 million, 15 million by the Summer and 17 million by the end of 1998.

Happy 20th Anniversary 'ONE HOUR OF GIRL POWER'

I know it wasn't a CD release but it did incredibly well, probably better than some records today!

Sold estimated 650-700,000 copies in the UK
13X Platinum
#1 for 24 weeks on the UK Music Video chart
Best Selling Music VHS of 1997

Wish we had U.S. and worldwide sales like their albums.

and basically...iconic! :music: :dee:

the other day i was checking some sales figures of Russian acts who were huge in 1997-1998 and some acts who were less famous as Spice Girls had sales like 700 000 for one album (Стрелки) for example.
Линда went on to sell 1500 000 her hit album back in 1997 (not including fake copies) so i would have predicted it
was around
Russia 1 700 000 - 2 000 000 with spice
Ukraine 300 000 - 500 000 in Ukraine

Spice World
Russia 700 000 - 1 000 000
Ukrain 300 000 - 500 000

Forever
Russia 100 000 - 150 000
Ukrain 50 000 - 100 000

If I recall they were recording a Volume 2 but, when Geri left, the project was cancelled and we got the America Tour video instead.

Turkey has an official single and album chart since very long time. And first two album sold more than 1 millon copies. Wannabe and SUYL reached #1 and other songs including SYBT and Viva Forever did pretty well.

Thanks for posting! :D

It should be noted that this list is based on pure sales only (physicals & downloads), no streaming data is included.

The last time the Official Charts Company did a list of Spice Girls' solo singles sales was in May 2013. The changes in order are as follows:

I Turn to You has overtaken Mi Chico Latino
Both Take My Breath Away and Not Such An Innocent Girl have passed Scream If You Wanna Go Faster
Maybe has now outsold Downtown
If That Were Me is now above Free Me
Loving You is the only new entry in the Top 40
Lullaby has overtaken Here It Comes Again

Quite surprised about If That Were Me & Lullaby advancing over Free Me & Here It Comes Again respectively at some point over the past 4 years. The last sales update we had for these four singles was way back in June 2009. Their sales totals at that point were:

55,563 - Free Me
53,595 - If That Were Me
39,890 - Here It Comes Again
38,898 - Lullaby

Melanie C - Update:

- When You’re Gone: 747,000 sales
- Never Be The Same Again: 429,000 sales
- I Turn To You: 384,000 sales
- Northern Star: 216,000 sales

The OCC wrote:Mel C has enjoyed a long and successful career post-Spice Girls, racking up 12 Top 40 hits to date.

More than any other girl! :dee:

The OCC wrote:By December 2000, the fate of Spice Girls was pretty much sealed. Geri had left, their third album Forever hadn’t been a huge success, and the magic seemed to have gone. Still, the announcement of their indefinite hiatus was a blow for many fans.

What announcement?
