Viva Forever sales update

Over 690,000 pure sales
1.8 million streams*
= 708,000 total

* Streaming data started to be included in 2014. A streaming figure is divided by 100 to convert it into its sales contribution, so 1.8m streams divided by 100 = 18,000 sales.

Edit: OCC revealed a sales figure of 675,000 in August 2013, so it's sold around 15,000 downloads in the last 4 years.

Do you think SYBT could've been streamed more than 5 million times? That's the only way it could've passed the million mark already, considering the song had sold 960k (but could be 950k since VF numbers you had before were too high).

Maybe there haven't been news about it from the Official Charts because it's not there yet?

The previous Viva Forever total sales figure of 700,000 included streaming contribution btw. So it's increased by 8,000 units in 4 months!

It would be great to know exactly how many streams their other singles have achieved purely in the UK since 2014. I can only make predictions. So, considering that VF has done 1.8m UK streams since they started to be counted, I reckon SYBT has achieved twice as many streams, at least!

If SYBT has achieved 3.6m streams that would be 36,000 units, and adding that to its pure sales of 961,000 would make it 997,000. So if it's managed 4m+ streams it's definitely achieved 1m.

Unfortunately million sellers with streaming data included has become so common that OCC don't tend to highlight it. For instance, I happen to know that a recent #6 hit by Shawn Mendes has 1m combined sales, but OCC didn't mention it. So they probably won't make a point of mentioning SYBT passing this figure. I just hope they do another article for the song for its 21st anniversary & actually include streaming figures this time (annoyingly for the 20th anniversary article they only mentioned its pure sales).

I'd be very interested to know how many UK streams have been achieved by Wannabe since 2014. It wouldn't surprise me if it's around 35-40m streams, which would add 350k or 400k to its life time figure. That would increase Wannabe to 1.7m+, approaching 1.8m!

Wannabe will get a 3x plat cert sometime over the next year or so I think so then we will know it is at 1.8m including streams.

I worked this out in a rather convoluted way... but these are my estimates for what their streaming contribution to their UK singles totals up to now, could be! I've listed these as sales rather than as stream counts:

340,000 - Wannabe
37,000 - Say You'll Be There
36,000 - 2 Become 1
35,000 - Spice Up Your Life
29,000 - Stop
20,000 - Who Do You Think You Are (contributes to the release of Mama/Who Do You Think You Are)
(18,000 - Viva Forever)
12,000 - Too Much
11,000 - Mama (does not contribute to the release of Mama/Who Do You Think You Are)
8,700 - Holler (contributes to the release of Holler/Let Love Lead The Way)
6,600 - Goodbye
2,500 - Let Love Lead The Way (does not contribute to the release of Holler/Let Love Lead The Way)
1,900 - Headlines (Friendship Never Ends)

Spoiler: show
How I came up with the above figures:

The first time I took note of the Spice Girls' singles worldwide Spotify streaming counts was on 25th June 2015. I most recently checked on 1st July 2017. I subtracted a song's 2015 figure from the 2017 figure to work out its plays achieved in those 2 years.

In 2 years, Viva Forever increased by 5,678,711 streams (album & single versions). Who Do You Think You Are increased by 6,313,960 streams (album and single versions). WDYTYA's figure is 1.1119% higher than Viva Forever's.

Knowing that Viva Forever has achieved 1,800,000 streams in the UK since 2014, I multiplied that figure by 1.1119%, to find out how many times WDYTYA has potentially been streamed in the UK. That came to 2,001,420. Dividing that by 100 equals 20,014 sales (rounded down to 20,000).

I applied this method to all the other singles. For instance Wannabe is 18.9495%, so that percentage multiplied by 1,800,000 = 34,109,100, then divide that by 100 = 341,091 (rounded down to 340,000).

This methodology isn't flawless by any means, there's a few variables I'm unable to take into account... but I reckon the figures I've arrived at won't be too far off!

-Spotify obviously isn't the only streaming service, but as far as I know it's currently still more popular than Apple Music. Spotify is the only service that reveals its stream counts, hence why I'm using their data-

For the sake of interest, looking at 2 Become 1:
Its pure sales (physical + download) stood at 1,140,000 as of February 2017. I've estimated 36,000 units from streaming. That comes to 1,176,000. We know that it definitely hasn't sold 1,200,000 yet because it has not been certified as 2xPlatinum in the UK. 24,000 units would require another 2.4m streams. Hopefully an increase in UK streams around Christmas time and the ever increasing rise in streaming popularity will see it achieve 2xPlatinum in maybe another year? Obviously it'll still be achieving some download sales as well.

Managed to find out that Say You'll Be There has sold a little under 992,000 in the UK to date, including streams. Less than I estimated/hoped, but nevertheless it's edging closer to 1m! Hopefully it won't be long until it does.

thanks Jay1 for your algorithms x

992,000 is quite the jump for SYBT. Beyond the cheese factor of Wannabe/Stop and the Olympics effect of SUYL, it's really stood the test of time I think.

Thank you Jay.

Are these totals below separate or inclusive of the streaming list above? Thanks

For example -

Also it's funny how Wannabe sold 1.8 in the U.S. in 1997 and it's total is now at 3 million.

SYBT sold 900k and 2B1 sold 700k both in 1997 but have never been updated. I wonder how many singles the group shifted in total in the States and many times their music has being streamed? Wish we could know.

Albums
2,940,000 - Spice [#1]
1,576,709 - Spiceworld [#1]
413,129 - Greatest Hits [#2]
266,000 - Forever [#2]

Are these the most up to date album sales jay? :) GH has been very consistent in its selling since 2007. Would love a 10 year anniversary re-issue, even if it was just vinyl. Or a CD, perhaps with a couple of unreleased tracks. Feel like it would sell more if a physical copy was still on shelves.

If I'm not wrong the GH was restocked in some shops not so long ago. Or maybe it was Spice...
