Jay wrote:^ I have to disagree, Wannabe is still far and away their most known/loved song for casual fans & the general public at large. Their numbers on YouTube & Spotify support this:

Wannabe on YouTube - 244,177,173 views
Wannabe on Spotify - 145,476,945 streams

Spice Up Your Life on YouTube - 16,276,414 views
Spice Up Your Life on Spotify - 17,780,389 streams

SUYL is of course one of their most popular songs, but it never has and never will overtake Wannabe in the popularity stakes. I'd say the only set of people who generally prefer Spice Up Your Life to Wannabe are their most devoted hardcore fans, i.e. us lot. :p

---

As for the SUYL music video, I totally understand why the director heard a "dark sound" in the song and thus went with a dark looking video. It compliments it instrumentally - but not so much lyrically. Some of the imagery is very bleak, which is in stark contrast to the positive lyrics. The overall impression the video leaves me with is that this version of Spiceworld is not a nice place to live in at all, and that the girls are ruling over the people in a seemingly oppressive fashion. I totally see why it's not what they had in mind for the song. Anyway, it's certainly their most interesting video! My major thumbs down towards it is the rain effect, it looks very cheap. I don't mind the hover boards, it's super obvious green screen of course, but they look cool anyway. :p

Wasn't Spice Up Your Life nominated for an Ivor Novello?

So it was panned by critics but nominated for a "writers award" on "Best Single"? ...

Am I right?

I never knew they were unhappy with the video. I suppose it isn't their best video. I think if I had to rank their videos in order I would go as follows;

1). Say You'll Be There - love the styling and nasty vibe - suits the song and the desert is a great location.

2). Goodbye - always liked the winter feel, the flying plates and again the setting suits the song - being quite haunting.

3). Holler - the styling again is great and the themes of the 4 elements of the world I thought was quite clever in terms of sending the message of them now being 4.

4). Stop - just like its location - dance moves and general pure pop feel to the video.

5). Wannabe - I think the chaos of the video is well captured by completing in 1 shoot.

6). Who Do You Think You Are - good video - fun for comic relief.

7). Let Love Lead The Way - again like the elements.

8). Mama - inclusion of mums is good.

9). Too Much - they all look great but the video was to promote the movie not the song.

10). Headlines - a bit disappointing after such a long wait - not just the song but the video too!

11). 2 Become 1 - what was the dear about?

12). Spice Up Your Life - agree that it didn't quite fit the song.

13). Viva Forever - doesn't feature the girls - felt lazy?

Funny how opinions can differ on these things - I think Spice Up Your Life ranks up there with their best and I actually love the Viva Forever video.

Headlines is by far their worst video. Everything from the concept, the editing and the styling was just all wrong - poor Victoria looks like the kind hooker that does the kinky stuff in parts of it! :dizzy:

I am more than happy with the video, since I love sci-fi movies and usually they are quite dark and creepy. :D

If you believe in symbolism, in that case

The meanings associated with the deer combine both soft, gentle qualities with strength and determination:

Gentleness
Ability to move through life and obstacles with grace
Being in touch with inner child, innocence
Being sensitive and intuitive
Vigilance, ability to change directions quickly
Magical ability to regenerate, being in touch with life’s mysteries

Sorry but considering 'Headlines' better than 'SUYL', 'VF' and '2B1' is all kinds of wrong. It's not even a video, but a 4-minutes long TV advert (and not just because of the underwear thing, the whole concept and photography screams commercial, not music video).

And the whole "I don't like the VF video because they don't appear on it" excuse is boring too.

I found the Viva Forever video way too childish... Headlines was just to show off their bodies haha. Spice up your life is one of their best imo

I think we can all agree that "Headlines" is, for most fans, their worst...

IMO, "Let Love Lead The Way" follow closely. It has a nice idea behind it but there's something about their looks, that seems bad (Mel C's hair, VB's hair...)... Dunno, I cringe when I watch it. I even prefer the simpler "Mama"...

SUYL is one of my favorite videos! Loved how the signs had the Spice brands going on and there's something about the dark/high tech vibe that's really interesting, specially back then. I do agree there's a bit of a miss between the song and the video tho. I happened to watch a live performance of Spice Up Your Life (probably the Istanbul VHS) only a while after I saw the music video, and I got a "oh wait a minute" moment and it gave me a total different perspective to the song. It does have more of a dancy party carnival vibe going on and the music video left that out.

I have to agree that the video is too dark and gloomy. However, for me the video delivers in the sense that, they are invading earth and taking over the world, which is exactly what they were doing around the time the single was released. Maybe they could've done it with a more colourful and happier video, but it still captures the essence of the song.

In hindsight they usually tend to disagree with several facts in Spice history.

They were young girls on top of the world and they didn't have time/ability to choose what was the best for them: they simply did it because someone else decided for them. You don't have to be ashamed for that, you have to trust your team and it's quite normal when you're at a such level. Boybands and girlbands need management to take care of themselves.

As for the video, I loved the world domination idea. At that time a more colourful video would have been predictable: with their second album they started to grow up. Even "Too Much" and "Stop" are more mature compared to the previous clips.

None of their videos is particularly genius, but the "Spice Up Your Life" showed how a grey world can be changed into the Spiceworld with the arrival of the Spice Girls and their infectious song.

Personally never liked Say You'll Be There video. The individual shots and outfits OK, but the overrall concept was a bit man-hatery, even if it was presented in a tongue-in-cheek manner. That and Mama are probably my two least like vids from them.

a happier&colourful video would be much better...
futuristic effects are really cheap... around the same period the Backstreet Boys made Larger Than Life and it was amazing. If the Virgin team worked hard, they could have done something like Larger Than Life -futuristic & colourful.
...
Carnival theme and futuristic images could have worked... would be much better than this dark and full of cheap effects video.
waves crashing down over me...

^Larger Than Life was released 2 years later. Hardly "around the same time" specially in a moment where special effects were developing at quite a fast speed and a 2 year gap did make a big difference technology wise.
Considering ALL the city from the SUYL video was computer-generated you can't really throw in the "cheap" card just because the surfing scenes were obvious "green screen moments".
