Purchasing surround set (Alert: noob warning!)
I'm a complete newb to this, but the tv I'm watching the Closing Ceremonies on has sound that isn't fit for the occasion. The tv has a SPDIF OUT connection, apparently, but I am at a loss what the heckityheck I am to do with this information as my usual opinion on this matter is "f*&^% expensive, I'd rather save up and go to a gig instead"... But I think this calls for proper sound, so is there ANYONE here who can tell me ANYTHING about this? And please be gentle with me, big pricetags give me the shivers

Re: Purchasing surround set (Alert: noob warning!)
We bought our blu-ray player that came with a set of 5.1 surround sound speakers for less than $200 on sale (Panasonic) and they are enough of a step-up from the regular TV audio that I feel we made a good in-between purchase until we can afford an awesome surround sound set-up.
Basically you will get a sub and five speakers. The sub looks like a little box and has all the outlets on the back for you to connect your speakers to and then the sub is what gets plugged into your Blu-ray player or TV. Your speakers will be marked as they are specifically made for your Left Back, Right Back, Left Front, Right Front and Center.
I didn't know what I was doing either and I just read the booklet that came with everyone along with a dash of common sense
You'll want to be aware of the extensions you have on your TV/Blu-ray, for example, ours all use HDMI cables, but you can get other kinds to. You can also bring in the booklets that came with your TV/Blu-ray player when you go to purchase and the salesperson should be able to tell you if they will connect properly.
Stores like Future Shop and Best Buy and other chain electronic stores usually offer an in-house set-up for a cost if you don't want to hook it up yourself. I think they're typically $50.
