David Beckham becomes first 'Elle' solo male cover star

David Beckham is to become the first solo male cover star of Elle magazine.

The footballer will grace the cover of the July issue, which will celebrate the London Olympic Games.

Speaking about the upcoming issue, editor-in-chief Lorraine Candy said: "David Beckham is a national hero, so we saw an opportunity to shoot a celebratory cover to support an historical and patriotic year.

"He is an icon and Elle is known for featuring icons on its cover. This is a first for us on the newsstand and I believe he is loved by men and women alike"

Candy added: "Anyway, who doesn't want to see a picture of one of the world's most handsome men on the front cover of a magazine? It will be a collector's issue."

Males who have appeared on the cover alongside females include Paul Weller, Gary Oldman, Tim Roth and Ewan McGregor - who has gone on to appear twice more alongside Nicole Kidman and Renee Zellweger.

The magazine's Twitter feed will carry a behind-the-scenes preview from the Los Angeles shoot from 10pm GMT tonight (April 10).

The July issue of Elle, featuring David Beckham, will go on sale on May 30.

Back in his experimental fashion days, no one could accuse Beckham of faint-hearted dressing. He trialled double leather, sarongs, cornrows, yoga-master tunics, pageboy caps and other brave trends.

But that’s all in the past. In recent years, Beckham has undergone a style maturation that has tracked the ascendance of wife Victoria’s fashion career.

These days, the football star and model father has done away with the novelty outfits in favour of three-piece suits, luxe basics and sleek hairstyles. (Thanks to his bodywear range for H&M, we’re confident that he wears sensible foundation garments too.)

If it's a complete new haircut he won't be able to hide it for long. Maybe it was just a different hairstyle for the shoot...? I'm very excited about the editorial though!
