Breaking News: David Beckham Announces Retirement.

Postby Sah » 16 May 2013, 15:56

Only the first report from Daily Mail so far, but wow, it defo is an end of an era, and i thought it deserved its own thread!

WORLD EXCLUSIVE: David Beckham set to retire from football - England legend calls it a day

David Beckham is set to retire from football, bringing an end to a glittering career on the field.

Since his debut for Manchester United two decades ago, the 38-year-old has emerged as arguably the most iconic sportsman of his generation, captaining his country, collecting 115 caps, and celebrated as a champion in four different countries - the only British footballer in history to do so.

Despite the offer of an extended one-year deal at Paris Saint-German, sources in Paris have told Sportsmail that the 38-year-old has played his last game, bowing out on a high after helping Carlo Ancelotti's side win the French title for the first time in 19 years.

When approached for comment by Sportsmail, Beckham's representative was today unavailable.

The trailblazing midfielder - who played for some of the biggest clubs in the world such as Manchester United, Real Madrid, AC Milan and Los Angeles Galaxy - is now set to continue his ambassadorial duties with a variety of organisations, which include Sky Sports, adidas, Unicef and promoting football in China.

Having relocated from LA in January, Beckham is expected to set up a permanent base in London with his wife Victoria and children, Brooklyn, Romeo, Cruz and Harper.

His vast fortune of an estimated £165million comfortably makes him the richest athlete ever in British sport, with a host of lucrative sponsorship deals and salary payments over the last decade amassing his wealth.

Born in Leytonstone, Beckham started out with Ridgeway Rovers before being singled out by Manchester United legend Sir Bobby Charlton at a Soccer School in Barcelona.

At 14, he signed schoolboy terms at Old Trafford and joined the likes of Gary Neville, Paul Scholes and Nicky Butt in United's famous youth class of 1992, going on to make his first-team debut against Brighton in the League Cup that same year.

What an underwhelming way to end his career, to be honest.

How will I live without all those ass shots we'd get from every match?!

This truly is a sad day to me, omg! I did not see it coming, i mean i speculated he might end after the season, but with him i thought he woudl stretch it out well into 39.

The Biatches ya, but at least he went out as a champion once again, even if he didn't arrive until the end of the PSG season, could been worse to be honest. An yes, omg no more training, match candids, wtf!

Yeah I mean of course he ended on a high, because the team he was playing with won another title, but he hardly played with them, to be fair. Ah well, the end of an era, definitely.

It really is sad, wow i wonder if he decided this lately, maybe even after seeing Alex gone, or maybe it was planned all along, and him giving the money to charity, wow!

I am surprised that they wanted to extend his contract for another year and he is rejecting that. Maybe winning the league, he now thinks it is good to end on a high.

Can't find the tweet from PSG on their timeline.

And I would have expected that he is the first one to announce such a message.

Official statement from AP:

David Beckham says he is retiring from soccer at the end of the season.

The 38-year-old Beckham recently won a league title in a fourth country with Paris Saint-Germain. He has become a global superstar since starting his career at Manchester United.

Beckham says he is "thankful to PSG for giving me the opportunity to continue but I feel now is the right time to finish my career, playing at the highest level."

Beckham also played for Real Madrid and the Los Angeles Galaxy, winning titles with both those clubs as well as with United.

On the international stage, Beckham has made 115 appearances for England's national team — a record for a player other than a goalkeeper.

I feel more emotional than I thought I would.

The concept of him no longer being a footballer is so foreign. I don't know how we'll survive not knowing where he is or what he's up to - when you're an athlete you can never disappear because there is always a game or training right around the corner. Not that I think the Beckhams will EVER disappear. :p

He still has a couple of games left with PSG right? I just hope they give him the send of he deserves.

Curious to see what he is going to do now. Best wishes!!

The annoucement does not say much. I would have expected some indication of what next for him. I am sure that Victoria will tweet about it today.

^

But what did you expect? Him to lay out his entire plan? Its not about that now, its about honoring a great player and a great career. Obviously he has many businesses set for future so his work is stacked for him. And to think we thought today was a slow news day......
