Original title: 11 years ago: Maybe released

Image

6 years to the date after the Spice Girls released 'Spice Up Your Life', Emma released her 6th solo single 'Maybe'! Perhaps '6' was a common theme here, because 'Maybe' went on to chart at #6 in the UK, and spent 6 weeks in the Top 40! #1 in this week was a new entry from the Sugababes - 'Hole In The Head', while other new entries came from Kevin Lyttle, 50 Cent, Sophie Ellis-Bextor and REM.

Emma's 'Maybe' sold 21,500 in its first week, but was prevented from entering the Top 5 by a mere 800 copies, with 50 Cent's 'P.I.M.P.' claiming the #5 position. 'Maybe' sold a further 12,000 copies in week 2, and has a somewhat underwhelming lifetime total of 77,000 copies sold. It was a great shame that 'Maybe' wasn't scheduled sooner, because a week earlier the #3 single only needed to sell 20,000 copies! Emma potentially could have achieved a Top 3 hit with this. :(

Despite not quite being the huge hit it truly deserved to be, 'Maybe' would go on to be the solo hit that Emma chose to perform during the 'Return of the Spice Girls' set list in 2007/8!

This single is widely regarded as being one of the best ever songs to come from a solo Spice Girl, and regularly does well in the various Spice Girls/Emma suvivor/rate etc games. :D

Such a lovely song. To me this one is part of "what the hell is going on on the british charts anyway" story. It is catchy, fun, great pop song with an amazing video and Emma promoted like Hell. Still fresh after 11 years! Too bad she followed this amazing song with the boring as hell "I'll be there" instead of the Instant classic (had it been released) Breathing.

Its scary that the early noughties were that long ago now very scary. 2002/03 still seems relevantly recent to me in a lot of ways but its been over a decade now.

Anyway love Maybe should have charted higher and suffered from the same drawback as Look At Me at having only one physical format.

I thought it would be #1. Great video+catchy songs+great promo = sure smash hit, but UK public had already gotten tired of spice mania.

Gosh 11 years? Crazy. It just doesn't feel that long ago.

This really was a moment for Emma wasn't it? Sometimes we're all guilty of throwing an unnecessary amount of praise at certain songs or things the girls do, but in 'Maybe's case it is totally deserving of every bit of love we throw its way. The song and video are quite simply perfection. It still sounds so timeless and out of this world, yet completely unique. Emma's confidence and presence in the video and performances was incredible, especially when you compare to how timid she would sometimes appear during the 'AGLM' era. She looked like a total star!

The only imperfection within the campaign was that it only peaked at No.6. It did deserve so much more. Although, in hindsight, and not just the sort of hindsight we have now where we fully appreciate how amazing it was/would be for a Spice Girl to be in the Top 10, it was amazing it got so high. It sounded so so different to anything else out at that time, especially if you compare it to the other songs in the Top 10 that week, and the new releases that week (like the Sugababes and Sophie EB). 'Maybe' really stood out, but probably wasn't cool enough to appeal to the same audience that were buying Sugababes, Jamelia, 50 Cent etc. Even more surprising is how it got as high as No.16 on the airplay charts? This is even more impressive when you consider that none of the 'FM' era singles were playlisted by Radio 1. Capital did support 'Maybe' though, and if i'm not wrong gave the song it's premiere. That in itself is quite baffling to think Capital would have playlisted a song like 'Maybe', when you listen to how dire their playlist is these days :death:

Oh and it was so frustrating how it held the midweek No.4 all week only to lose out at the last minute! A no.4 peak for 'Maybe' would have felt much more satisfying.

This is one of the biggest solo spice travesties.

Should have been #1 alongside Think about it!!

I wonder how Free Me the album would have performed if it had been released in the place of her first album with the same image etc. I think it would have rivalled Northern Star for biggest selling solo Spice album.

^ An interesting query! I wonder whether that sort of vibe of music would have done well in 2001? Although I suppose even for 2003/4 it was a bit "out there", so perhaps it could have done better if it'd been out a few years before.

That album and its singles all deserved to do better then they did. Although the 33k(?) that the Free Me album sold in its first week was very impressive, for a #7 debut. Those sort of sales were usually more than enough to guarantee a Top 5 album.

She should had done more promo in North American, mainly in Canada. Maybe stayed at #6 at the daily 6 at 6 countdown on one popular radio station in Montreal. Melanie C never achieved this (in Montreal) and yet she toured twice here. I will not forgave her for having missed this oportunity.

Wasn't the Maybe video overplayed on Much Music? I remember reading at the time that it was like #1 on some Much Music countdown.

I wonder if Virgin would've allowed such an album to released?

Maybe, we don't have that channel here (it's the English Language/Ontarian channel) we have Musique Plus which is its sister station and I never recall the video beeing there. They hardly played solo song (even if Melanie C and Geri where invited there for interview or performance, the first time I saw Carolyna on TV was in the middle of the interview). You won't see them playing something else than Rihanna, Miley Cyrus and other "cool" stars for the "kids".

12 years ago: Maybe released

Postby Jay » 13 Oct 2015, 13:37

I'm being lazy and bumping this topic... 'Maybe' was released 12 years ago. 12! :x

One of the best pop singles ever, I think. <3

Two personal memories: my mum bought this single from ASDA for me. How I remember that, I don't know! She came home from work and gave it to me. I remember asking her if there was a "CD2" and she said that there wasn't (obviously :( ). Also... I came out to my closest friends at school, on this day. I think the only reason I remember that so clearly is because 'Maybe' came out. :D So I'd had quite an emotional (but great) day at school and then to top it off I received a Flawless CD.

Can't believe 2003 was 12 years ago.

The last year before X Factor took over.

Anyway Maybe is as divine now as it was then.
