I was very surprised when I saw a Ryan Giggs interview back-to-back with one of David's... they have the same voice to me, except one has a Manchester accent and one has a Cockney accent. Yet Giggs doesn't get teased for it?

AS has more about the dinner. It was a surprise party and the tennis player Fernando Verdasco was there, too. There was a cake carried by the little people and written in chocolate on it was the saying "You'll never walk alone." His friends had engraved on a silver plate: "We hope you will not forget the good times you have had in Madrid. However far you may be, here you have a home. Remember the ham, the wine, the bad and good times and most importantly remember your friends. Remember that."

Awwwwww.

Well, they called them "actors that brought some color to the party." Little people are my words so the picture that accompanied the article would make sense.

DAVID BECKHAM will be given a top gong at a glittering awards ceremony tonight, hailing him as our Greatest Briton Overseas.

The former England captain is flying in to London from his Madrid home to collect his award in person.

Becks is being recognised at the Greatest Britons 2007 ceremony for the outstanding contribution he has made to his country both on and off the pitch.

His personal intervention in the UK’s campaign to win the 2012 Olympics undoubtedly helped swing the vote in our favour. David will arrive by private jet to collect his award then head back to report for training with his Real Madrid team-mates the next day.

Greatest Britons 2007 is a new star-studded annual awards ceremony and will be screened live on ITV1 tonight at 9pm.

Thanks for all the news bits and pictures. It's great that he's getting so much honour now for his contribution to the UK and it's so great that some of his teammates really like him.

And a shallow point .....new pics in a suit again :p.

There is now no good reason for England to ignore Beckham

Richard Williams
Tuesday May 22, 2007
The Guardian

If Cristiano Ronaldo watched the latest episode of Real Madrid's death-defying attempt to win La Liga on Sunday night, he would have seen a player who used to wear his No7 shirt at Manchester United giving a wonderful exposition of the art of the modern winger. Playing a significant part in dragging his team to a late away victory against Recreativo Huelva, David Beckham did just about everything that Ronaldo had failed to do at Wembley on Saturday. And now, inevitably, there will be a demand for his inclusion in Steve McClaren's England squad for the forthcoming matches against Brazil and Estonia.

To nobody's surprise Beckham has been making it clear that he would welcome a recall to the colours. When he laid down the captain's armband during that tearful press conference in Baden-Baden on the morning after England's dismissal from the World Cup last July, he did not believe that his gesture would signal the end of his career as an international player. But McClaren saw the chance to make his mark at the start of a new era and few of us were critical of his decision to omit the former captain from his first squad.

Our reaction was conditioned by two things. First, Beckham seemed to have acquired a habit of turning up to big tournaments in a state of questionable fitness, while exercising a kind of droit de seigneur over his place in the squad. Second, he and his wife had played a leading role in turning England's World Cup campaign into a celebrity circus. Their five-star existence appeared to have drained the squad of the core values of modesty and humility.

There was some justification for the scorn, since self-indulgence - and an indulgent head coach - had dulled his edge and weakened his focus. But his severest critics failed to take into account Beckham's innate appetite for the game and his contribution to whatever successes England achieved during the 10 years that separated his first senior international from his last.

His determination, the quality that enabled him to survive that notorious red card in the 1998 World Cup, remains undimmed. Last January 13, two days after he announced that he would be moving to Los Angeles next season, Fabio Capello said the Englishman would never play for Real Madrid again. Less than a month later, however, Beckham forced his way back into the team and made such an impact that he has stayed there, when not injured or suspended, ever since. Six weeks out with a damaged knee ligament, caused when he fell into an advertising board after crossing the ball at speed, were ended on April 21 when he came off the bench to set up a winner against Valencia, and his presence since then has helped the team to mount the most improbable of late challenges.

As he shuttled between the centre-right of midfield and the right wing in Huelva on Sunday, his perceptive passing and wickedly curling crosses were at the heart of Madrid's success. He made the opening goal for Robinho, and several other first-half chances were spurned. In the last minute, however, with the score at 2-2 and Madrid needing to win to keep the destiny of the title in their own hands, his energy took him into a position from which he could nudge Gonzalo Higuaín's pass on to Fernando Gago and then watch as Roberto Carlos shot home from the decisive pass.

Quite honestly, there seems no good reason why he should not be lining up on England's right wing at Wembley a week on Friday. Steven Gerrard would be happier in central midfield, Aaron Lennon has had a poor season and Shaun Wright-Phillips lacks the necessary quality. True, it would not be a forward-looking move. But we remember how France recalled Zidane, Thuram and Makelele in order to reach last year's World Cup final. And it is not as though McClaren has any better ideas.

Funny, I thought that the other WAGs and their families were creating much more of a circus but each to their own I guess. They shouldn't have been there in the first place so really I don't think Victoria or David should get any blame for it.

I thought he denied that ? Even in his interview with Oliver Holt in the Mirror when his book came out, I'm fairly sure he said that it wasn't his idea and even Owen Heargreaves said it wasn't his suggestion or something like that.

I had jury duty today. I took Becks bio with me, I've still only skimmed the thing. In the "Beckham (pen)" chapter he talks about how Sven asked him as captain to ask the other players if they wanted to bring the families to Dubai. Sounds like what happened in Germany. He did want them there and brought it to the table (or pool). But I disagree that Victoria was part of the circus. She was overshadowed by the other, drunker WAGs.

Hmmm interesting. The media could have focused on them a lot less though, made the whole thing a mockery. It was more like it was their tournament or something.

Henry backs Beckham for England
Arsenal striker Thierry Henry believes David Beckham's form for Real Madrid this season warrants an England recall.
Beckham has not played international football since Steve McClaren became head coach after last year's World Cup.

But, with England due to play Brazil on 1 June ahead of a Euro 2008 qualifier against Estonia, Henry told the BBC: "He has never dropped his quality.

"He has been the most consistent player at Real Madrid. Maybe his quality was not appreciated with England before."

England have failed to impress in their Euro 2008 qualifying campaign under McClaren, drawing against Macedonia and Israel and losing to Croatia to leave them fourth in Group E.

And Henry said: "What Beckham has done at Real Madrid has been unbelievable.

606: DEBATE

"I don't want to say anything controversial, because to be the England manager is probably the hardest job in the country and you have to respect Steve McClaren's choice.

"But maybe when David was playing for England, people took him for granted. As soon as he's not playing people call for him to be recalled and that speaks volumes.

"The guy has been magnificent for English football."

Beckham added to the BBC: "Whether the chance will come up to play for England again, who knows.

"I've been so honoured to play and captain my country as many times as I have and everyone knows how I feel about playing for my country.

"If that chance comes, I've always said I'd be ready but let's wait and see."

^^ thanks for posting. i like what he had to say, and obviously i agree.

i sooooooo hope this story is true, as Extras is one of my favorite shows. although, the bit about ricky throwing a party. um yeah not buying.

Victoria and David Beckham set to star in 'Extras'

Victoria and David Beckham have been approached by comedian Ricky Gervais to appear in his star-studded sitcom 'Extras'.

The British comedy writer and actor has enticed the likes of Robert De Niro and David Bowie to appear in his show and now he is hoping to persuade Posh and Becks to make a cameo.

A source told Britain's Daily Star newspaper: "Ricky knows David and Victoria have a great sense of humour, which the average person doesn't always get to see.

"They have a carefully cultivated image - but behind that they don't take themselves too seriously.

"People will be shocked to see this other side but Ricky knows it will be TV gold."

The 45-year-old star of 'The Office' is even planning to host a welcome party for the celebrity couple when they move to Los Angeles in July, in an attempt to win their favour.

The source added: "Ricky appreciates how hard it will be for David and Victoria to uproot their family and move to LA.

"Even thought they are used to being abroad, LA seems much further away from the UK, so they will be cheered up by having a few British accents around at the party."

Ricky is allegedly planning to invite 'Grease Is The Word' judge Denise Van Outen and BBC chat show host Jonathan Ross to the Hollywood party he is throwing for the Beckhams.
