gee that one guy from the US men's gym team is so cocky!

Postby Hungy » 12 Aug 2008, 10:05

:hunny: I was watching NBC, an American station, which btw has such a completely different feel to the Canadian coverage of the Olympics, it's all about U S A, U S A, U S A... and when they won the bronze in the mens' team final, this one guy kept on talking total random shit to the TV camera, it was so "American"! :$ I did think that one young guy who finished the pommel horse routine was sooooo cute! And I felt sorry for the David guy who cried as he was the only unused alternate.

And the German men's team is hot too!!!!!!

When he was doing that last night - I just wanted to say "Shut UP" he sounded so uneducated and it really bothered me. I get annoyed when athletes run their mouths to a camera like that.

On the other side of things though, i DO love that they were able to pull off winning the bronze medal, when everyone counted them out of it.

I know what you mean. I was watching a men's relay heat, and when the US wasn't in first, the announcers wouldn't even talk about the race at all. But then when they pulled into first, then they couldn't shut up about the race :D

I remember an Olympics where NBC had advertised their coverage as "America's game". hehe, isn't it a game that belongs to the world?

Of course I understand that NBC will cover more Americans, just as CBC will cover more Canadians, but CBC also covers a lot of other countries, including hiliting the accomplishments of the US team. NBC seems to just focus on Americans. :)

And Raluca: isn't that what sports really is about???? :D

btw, I don't think it was wise that you tried to bring in murder ("kill us all") to get any kind of point across, cause murder was never mentioned nor hinted at until you came along.

I do hate that, the Olympics is a great way to show how much we all have in common and see how talented people across the world are in the same sports and yet most people here have a "USA, everybody else sucks" attitude.

LOL true Beth. But I guess people are just frustrated that USA and China are winning it all and they are getting cockier by the minute.

But I do root for Phelps !

 yes we are!

no actually that statement made me laugh...i was just giving you a hard time...i vote for the athlete most of the time...not the country...i usually sob up during their little background story before they're about to race, perform, etc...and then i am dissapointed if they don't...i voted for some italian the other day because of their "heart break" story..i'm a sucka

thanks for clarifying, I appreciate that! :)

I do root for the athletes that I find really good-looking. :$ Used to be Peter van hoogenband, and then I liked Ian Thorpe (more for what he accomplished), and then Michael Phelps (for being so darned sure he's going to win them all).

We are a cocky bunch, its what we are taught lol. I think that some take it further than the others, that guy was bugging me a lot too. I just wished he would shut up I even thought "hes making us all seem rude."

I think we treat our patriotism a lot differently than other countries. I am also very intrested in the athletes from different countries and think that NBC could do a little be better to give a broader idea of whats going on with the other countries. In all fairness to the NBC stations the substations do show different matches and less popular sports around the clock. most of it though, is on a bunch of different random cable stations

OKay, so the Olympics is over and done with and I'm a little depressed, but, I just now starting reading this section of Den Den...so, a wee bit late. That-being-said, I watched just about every channel I could get from my Comcast Cable - all NBC stations along with the CBC and I have to say, each of our countries focused in on our own people, yup, the Canadian Channel was doing this as well. And, as mentioned already on here, the main NBC channel was showing all the American teams and athletes most of the time, but, the other channels - and there were a bunch - were focused in on other teams - i.e. boxing, rowing, water polo, beach volleyball and etc...

I don't see an issue with the "main" station focusing in on the home country...that's why they had all the other channels going...and, it is your own country that you are watching on TV isn't it?? Then again, the main station was also showing the Jamaican Sprinter - Bolt - most of the time, so, I think it came down to the "exciting" news of the moment that they showed. Plus, there's just plain logistics...how many athletes were on the US Team vs. some other countries?

I don't know, I see the points people made here, I liked watching particular sports (Beach Volleyball, Diving, Women's Fastpitch) with whatever athletes made things exciting, but, some of it just comes down to common sense on the why's behind it.

We only get the main NBC channel in Canada, not the other channels. so we only get NBC's perspective from an American perspective, in Canada. If that makes sense. :)
