Soul boy has a more alternative sound, that's why pop listeners don't get it, some people is used to the same sound.
It is an amazing song.

'Soul Boy' is a good song, just not very Melanie-esque at all. 'Reason' kind of become a Sunday rainy afternoon album as soon as it was steered in the direction of such a track.

If it hadn't been on the album and Melanie had performed it at some one-off event or put it as a b-side we would all probably be saying how dearly we loved the track.

This is true. However, 'Soul Boy' is on the album and I think it's a beautiful song. When I was younger, I was on the same page as everyone - what a crap song! But as I've grown older, I grew to tolerate it, and even enjoy it. Dare I even say I love the song now. It's not one of Melanie's best, but I think it has its place.

Soul Boy is a gorgeous song. it is very MC in the sense that she loves her songs to have some atmospheric sound to them.
